This course will provide attendees with a solid foundation to launch a career in the Bank Secrecy Act (AKA BSA) which encompasses anti-money laundering (AML) and the counter financing of terrorism (CFT). This program is comprised of 11 modules with each covering a specific area that pertains to a foundational understanding of BSA. Within these modules, our Director of Training, Nancy E. Lake, CAMS-Audit, CAMS-FCI,  will provide an introduction to financial services, an introduction to BSA, as well as Currency Transaction Reports (CTRs)/Monetary Instruments (MIs)/Funds Transfers, an overview of risk assessments, with some specific risks to consider, Customer Identification Program (CIP)/Customer Onboarding, monitoring basics, Customer Due Diligence (CDD)/Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD)/Beneficial Ownership, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs), and actual Case Studies. After completing each module there will be a quiz, and a final exam will be given after all modules have been completed. Upon successful passing of the exam, you will earn a Certificate of Completion and receive 10.5 CRCM and CAFP credits with the American Bankers Association.

The objectives of this course are:

  1. To get a better understanding of financial services.
  2. To get a better understanding of the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).
  3. To understand what CIP/CDD/EDD/Beneficial Ownership are and their importance in a BSA investigation.
  4. To recognize various risks and understand higher risk considerations when conducting investigations.
  5. To recognize what elements an investigator needs to gather, how to analyze the risks presented, and how to document the findings, in order to conduct an in-depth BSA investigation.


You will earn 10.5 CRCM / CAFP credits from the ABA upon completion of the BSA Investigator course.

Course Format:

This course is designed for you to complete at your pace. The 11 modules cover roughly 9 hours of learning time. You will receive your certificate immediately upon successful completion of the exam.

Course Directions:

To begin the course, please click on the Introduction module below. You must complete each module with a passing quiz grade of 80% before moving to the next module. There is no limit to the amount of times you can take the quiz. Each module has a Lesson (video) that must be completed before you can take the quiz. Be sure to access the “Materials” tab to get a copy of the slide deck used in the Lesson as well as any handouts for each module.

While taking a module quiz:

  • Click a number to go to that particular quiz question
  • Answered questions are marked in blue while unanswered questions are white
  • Click the “Review question” button to mark a question as “for review”

The very latest editions of Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome should work fine on most devices. We do not recommend using Apple Safari or Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft Internet Explorer is no longer a supported browser.
